Many guests consider the fall season the best time to be at Poplar Creek Retreat on the Gunflint Trail. The colors are beautiful, the weather is usually nice, and the bug season has ended. Virtually every activity you can do during the summer months is available during the fall months! Whether you are interested in canoeing into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, mountain biking down Lima Grade, hiking one of the popular trails, or nature watching from the backyard, there will be plenty for you to do!

Grouse Hunting on the Gunflint Trail in Minnesota

Additionally, and if you are into grouse hunting, there are few better places to hunt grouse in Minnesota than Minnesota’s Gunflint Trail! From the cabin, you will have close access to miles of trails and old forest service roads! We suggest studying a map of Pat Bayle State Forest and charting out your own grouse hunting adventure from there. The large number of both ruffed and spruce grouse around the Gunflint Trail and Poplar Creek Retreat will make your hunt a memorable and rewarding experience for both you and your dog! Just make sure you understand who’s land you are on and follow all State hunting regulations. Also, please note that hunting is not permitted in Poplar Creek Commons, which is the immediate 12 acres surrounding Poplar Creek Retreat.

Ice Fishing on the Gunflint Trail in Minnesota

On the topic of ice, ice fishing is obviously a popular activity on the lakes near the Gunflint Trail. Adventurous ice fishers have been known to snowshoe to Swamp Lake in search of walleye and pike. Many trout lakes also exist in the area. Some resorts even offer guided trout excursions! If you are into ice fishing, you cannot go wrong with a long weekend at Poplar Creek Retreat.

Snowmobiling on the Gunflint Trail in Minnesota

Lastly, if snowmobiles are your thing, the Gunflint Trail offers some of the best snowmobiling in the entire State of Minnesota. The trails are endless and run for miles. Various trail maps can be found online. Please note that snowmobiling is not authorized on the Seppala Trail in Poplar Creek Commons. We recommend heading to Lima Grade Road where you will have access to Pat Bayle State Forest and more trails than you can travel in a weekend!

Hiking

Discover scenic trails such as the Poplar Honeymoon Bluff Trail and Caribou Rock Trail that offer stunning views of the area.

Grouse Hunting

With access to miles of trails through prime ruffed and spruce grouse habitat, you’re sure to have a successful hunting trip.

Canoeing

Take a day trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area or paddle around on Little Ollie and Poplar Lake for a relaxing adventure.

Biking

Ride along the Pincushion Mountain Trails or the Gitchi-Gami State Trail for stunning views of Lake Superior and the surrounding forests.

Exploring

Head to town for excellent food and drink or catch a bite and have a cocktail at local establishments
